Welcome, everyone!
I am Igloo, the creator and admin of Sierra Spirit Canids.
SSC began with my passion for canids. Once upon a time, I was able to see captive wolves, coyotes, and red foxes. I also met a fennec fox at zoo camp. After being able to see these animals, I became enthralled with them; I learned everything I could. Wolves were my main loves for a long time, but as my life has continued I discovered that I also have a passion for other canids. New Guinea Singing Dogs, African Wild Dogs, Red Wolves, Red Foxes, Grey Foxes, Fennec Foxes...the list goes on! Canids are a group of animals that I love and understand deeply. I was a volunteer at a captive canid facility for several months, and I plan on returning soon; I am also a Junior Zookeeper at a zoo that has NGSD and, until recently, that very special fennec. With each experience I have being up close with these animals, a desire to protect them grows within me.
With these interests and passions, I continued to discover that there are many incredible canids out there that are Threatened, Endangered, and Critically Endangered. SSC was created to help these animals and showcase artwork of them. Our main focus is Threatened-Critically Endangered canids. Many people don't even realize that these animals exist, much less know that they need us; and know that we can ALL do something to help. The vast majority of people will have no idea what a New Guinea Singing Dog, Sierra Nevada Red Fox, or Island Grey Fox is. More people know about animals like African Wild Dogs, Red Wolves, and Etheopian Wolves; but they may not understand their plight or what WE can do to help them.
We will be raising awareness through artwork and literature; any drawings, posters, stories, poems, etc. are very welcome! Any of these things will raise awareness. SSC will provide you with basic information to put in the descriptions for all of your canid artwork! While rare canids will definitely be our main focus, other canids (such as Gray Wolves, Red Foxes, Fennecs, etc) will be accepted in moderation. But this is by no means a popular canid group, as we want to focus most on the canids who really need our help right now. We are accepting the more well-known canids because they can be used to raise awareness of environmental issues, connect people with canids, and teach people about their rarer subspecies. For example, one could draw a gray wolf and in the description say "Hey! Gray Wolves currently have fairly stable populations, but here are some issues regarding their habitat that must be addressed for these animals to continue to thrive. Also, while Canis lupus is not Endangered; there is a subspecies, the Mexican Gray Wolf, that really needs our help!" The SSC Forums will contain this kind of information that can be included in such pieces.
Here are some of the species that you can expect to see a lot of around here:
African Wild Dogs
New Guinea Singing Dogs
Sierra Nevada Red Foxes
Island Grey Foxes
Mexican Gray Wolves
Ethiopian Wolves
If you have any suggestions, let me know!
I hope that this group gains more members, so that we can spread awareness of these magnificent animals! I believe that together, we CAN make a difference! Let's work as a team to save these canids, and their habitats.
