Why is saving endangered species of animals important? Do we really need every species?
These are questions that may have crossed your mind at one time or another. In fact, they have even crossed my mind; for my whole life, I have cared about conservation. So, naturally, sometimes I wonder what it's all for. Why am I so passionate about saving animals? Do we really need all of the species that I love so much?
Saving species is important for the environment. Every species in an ecosystem (except for INVASIVE species, which in no way need to be saved) have adapted specifically for that ecosystem. Each species fills out an ecological niche, a place in that ecosystem that it occupies. Each niche fits into the grand scheme of the ecosystem. If one of these animals goes extinct, it could disrupt the entire system. That is why saving individual species is important. Without predators like canids, entire ecosystems would be compromised.
It is also important to preserve biodiversity, or the diversity of life. A diverse ecosystem will survive better than an ecosystem that is not diverse. Instead of relying on one plant species, one prey species, and one predator species; ecosystems have a wide variety of these things. Each species fills its own niche in this web of eating and being eaten, and the ecosystem can flourish. Diversity is a beautiful thing that should be preserved.
So, why do we focus on canids here?
I love all animals, and I'm completely soft when it comes to endangered species. However, as my father once said; we, as individuals, will never have enough money to donate to every cause that we are moved by. Everyone has some animals that they feel especially drawn to. For me, canids are one family of animals that I am particularly fond of. This is why I created a group dedicated to saving endangered canids. Other animals are no less worthy, but some people have to focus their passion in order to progress effectively. I created SSC because I have chosen to focus my passion into canids; SSC will be a beacon of awareness, as well as a tool for anyone to be able to help collect and spread knowledge.
Another reason why I chose to focus on canids is because it will be incredibly easy for me to spread knowledge of them. I have New Guinea Singing Dogs practically in my back yard, and African Wild Dogs aren't far either. I also know a lot about canids, which is of course useful; and I find talking about them very interesting. Another reason is simply that many people don't know that some of these wild dogs even exist. Endangered canids are a worthy, interesting, and easily acted upon cause for me.
What you should take away from this.
I wanted to explain why saving species is important, as well as why I chose canids as the focus of my group. But what I want you to take away from this thread, and from SSC as a whole; is inspiration. I hope that my passion and my goals effects you, and inspires you. We can all make a difference, by simply spreading awareness. If 1/500 people we reach decide to donate to conservation efforts, then we have made a difference. And this is possible! No matter how small, everything we do can make an impact. So please, don't be afraid to make a stand. You can help; we can all generate change if we work together.
