Official Description (copy-and-paste into art, please!)
Species Name: African Wild Dog
Latin Name: Lycaon pictus
Distribution: Sub-Saharan Africa
African Wild Dogs, also known as Cape Hunting Dogs, African Hunting Dogs, and painted wolves, are a species of wild dog native to Africa. They live in large packs of 2-27 individuals. Unlike most social carnivores, it is the female dogs who disperse from the pack; males usually remain with their natal pack. AWDs have strong social bonds, and hunt using complex strategies. The dominant pair is the most likely to breed, and each litter can contain 6-16 pups; 10 is the average. Unfortunately, only a small number of the pups will survive.
African Wild Dogs are listed as Endangered Species, mainly due to habitat loss; poaching of them and their prey species is also an issue. Want to help African Wild Dogs? Learn more about them! Also make sure to support organizations that help African Wild Dogs.
Good examples are Painted Dog Conservation (http://www.painteddog.org/) and the African Wild Dog Conservancy (http://www.awdconservancy.org/). Even if you can't donate, make sure to spread the word about these animals and their plight.
